Breathe: Abstract Landscapes

I have no words.

My latest series of acrylic abstracts reminds me how much nature influences my work, be it through stories, novels, art or photography. Landscapes are the main and constant characters in my life. I’m inspired by the wind, shadows, wildflowers, dead grasses, aspens and evergreens. I love the contrast of using a restrained palette to convey the wildness of mountains and mesas. These colors reflect winters spent in New Mexico, a different part of the state to my usual haunts. Each morning, coffee in hand I walk with the dogs, and catch glimpses of distant snow-capped ridges, notice the golden ripple of the grass, and ravens in flight in skies hinting of potential storms.

These days though, I have no words. For the last year and a half, I have been painting, and as a lifelong autodidact, I’ve been watching, listening, asking questions, and experimenting. I’m learning every day. And from small town England, to living in Germany, Spain, Guatemala and Mexico, from decades in the American Southwest to the Northeast, I continue to explore how these cultures influence my work as I find my way to a sense of home in nature, in the wildness of untouched land. I hope that you are drawn to linger with these impressionistic observations of dirt and sky, birds and critters, that you immerse yourself in the mountains, and breathe more easily. Relaxing as you come closer.

Most of the following paintings are acrylic at 16×20 inches on canvas although there are a few larger canvases, smaller paper paintings and others are mixed media. If you click on each image, you’ll see it in full otherwise they’re cropped to fit the pages. (At least that’s the case on the desktop view.) Enjoy!

Thank you!

Creativity is a driving force in my life, has been since studying and working as a documentary photographer in London in the 90s, showing my work in a few galleries there. I then spent years as a street-performer as I hitched my way across the States, bringing me to Santa Fe. Being involved in theatre here lead me to study clowning in San Francisco, performing solo vaudeville shows in the Southwest and even taking those skills to Guatemala, playing with the street kids. I wrote about my experiences, received an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and became an award-winning author, and memoirist. These days, I focus on images of all kinds. I have no words left.
